“How to style the Punk Rock Trend this season”
Punk rock culture originated in Great Britain and in America in the ‘70s. It was a movement of rebellion and resistance led by youth activists fighting against the government, politics and the economy.
The punk movement has an important place in fashion history. Torn clothing pinned together with safety pins, slogan tees, leather, tartan, crazy hair and makeup and highly sexual silhouettes were all on trend.
This winter runways were flooded with the revival of iconic punk rock inspired trends. The look was a more futuristic version including fishnet tights, tartan, biker jackets, deconstructed separates, spikes, studs, combat books and a heavy accent on leather.
The rival of the edgy punk rock trend is echoed on the runways this season with an underlying message for change on issues such as climate change, over-consumption and the ethics of fashion production.
We have outlined how to get an injection of this edgy, rebellious combination of punk rock and biker into your wardrobe:
To start, go black from head to toe. Popular colour combinations for street style punk looks include red, black and white.
A black leather or leatherette jacket is a classic wardrobe staple. You can use your existing leather jacket no matter what style to achieve punkish vibes. Team it back with satin, velvet or your fav black ripped jeans for a more wearable look.
Nothing says punk style like a tight pair of leather pants. The tighter the better. Combine your leather or vinyl pants with your leather jacket or band tee, for an easy to achieve a punk style outfit.
Ripped & distressed denim:
If you don’t have a pair of leather or leatherette pants you can alternatively achieve the look by wearing your fav distressed jeans, team back with a band tee and leather jacket.
Wear your favourite graphic band tee. If you don’t have one you can search your local thrift stores for some cool vintage rock band tee. Team it back with your fav leather pants or skirt for a glam street style vibe!
Tartan is a timeless print. Complete your look with a pair of tartan pants, a short tartan rebellious school girl like skirt, or an unbuttoned tartan shirt with the sleeves ripped off.
Add an edgy element by adorning your outfits with lots of studs, spikes, safety pins, buckle and chain details.
Thigh high boots:
Keep it totally sexy with thigh high black leather boots worn with sheer tights or fishnets. Complete the look by teaming them with a mini leather or tartan skirt and your fav band tee.
90’s style chunky combat boots are a must to achieve a punk rock street style look. The most exciting thing about this trend is that they are easy to wear, comfortable and perfect for the transition from Winter to Spring.
